DIRECTIONS TO TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY AIRPORT
Transylvania County Airport is 11 NM on the 210° radial from Asheville Regional Airport (22W) and 20 NM on the 248° radial from Sugarloaf VOR (SUG) (112.2 mhz). It lies below a quarry visible on a clear day from the south to southwest some 30 miles away. The hill containing the quarry obscures the airport from the north and northeast.

CONTACT ASHEVILLE APPROACH ON 124.65 mhz FOR VECTORS TO THE AIRPORT.

Note that some controllers still refer to the airport as "Penrose", the small rural community around the airport.

Note the location of a 5,049" (msl) tower 6 NM south of the airport. Other towers over 4,000' dot this ridgeline between the airport and the foothills of South Carolina.

Contact Transylvania County Unicom on 122.7 mhz
for airport advisories from 0830 to 1800 (or dusk, whichever is earlier) Night flights prohibited!

Runway 9/27 is 2,903' long by 50' wide and with an upward slope to the west of 3°.  (Note that early charts showed the runway length to be 3,100'.)

The threshhold for runway 27 is displaced 50' to accommodate powerlines along the road bordering the touchdown end of runway 27.

Standard lefthand traffic patterns are in use. For Runway 9, downwind can be flown over the quarry or just north of this hill. For Runway 27, the downwind turn to base occurs near a ridgeline running northeast to southwest. If your your turn to final is high, be prepared to go around until you are comfortable with the approach. Another alternative is to make a modified straight-in approach on about a 210° heading until your turn to short final. Be sure to to make a traffic call advising you are on a straight-in for Runway 27.

Crosswinds are not uncommon at 22W.  If AVL ATIS (120.2 mhz) is reporting strong, gusty north winds,be aware that rotor winds and wind shear will be very possible at 22W.

Under normal conditions, northerly winds at AVL will favor Runway 9 at 22W, while southerly winds at AVL will favor Ruway 27 at 22W.

The dashed lines depict preferred departure routes to help alleviate noise impact on our neighbors. The photograph is oriented with north at the top. The quarry is quite visible just north of the airport. The road which parallels the runway just outside the airport entrance is Old Hendersonville Highway, with the wider parallel roadway to the north being New Hendersonville Highway - otherwise known as US Highway 64.
